The Highwayman

Loreena Mckennitt

Liedtexte Übersetzung

The wind was a torrent of darkness
Among the gusty trees
The moon was a ghostly galleon
Tossed upon the cloudy seas
The road was a ribbon of moonlight
Over the purple moor
When the highwayman came riding
Riding, riding
The highwayman came riding
Up to the old inn door

He'd a French cocked hat at his forehead
A bunch of lace at his chin
A coat of claret velvet
And breeches of brown doe-skin
They fitted with never a wrinkle
His boots were up to the thigh
And he rode with a jeweled twinkle
His pistol butts a-twinkle
His rapier hilt a-twinkle
Under the jeweled sky

And over cobbles he clattered
And clashed in the dark inn-yard
And he tapped with his whip on the shutters
But all was locked and barred
He whistled a tune to the window
And who should be waiting there
But the landlord's black-eyed daughter
Bess, the landlord's daughter
Plaiting a dark red love knot
Into her long black hair

"One kiss my bonny sweetheart
I'm after a prize tonight
But I should be back with the yellow gold
Before the morning light
Yet if they press me sharply
And harry me through the day
Then look for me by the moonlight
Watch for me by the moonlight
I'll come to thee by the moonlight
Though hell should bar the way"

He rose up right in the stirrups
He scarce could reach her hand
But she loosened her hair in the casement
His face burned like a brand
As a black cascade of perfume
Came tumbling over his breast
And he kissed its waves in the moonlight
Oh, sweet waves in the moonlight
He tugged at his rein in the moonlight
And galloped away to the west

He did not come at the dawning
He did not come at noon
And out of the tawny sunset
Before the rise of the moon
When the road was a gypsy's ribbon
Looping the purple moor
A redcoat troop came marching
Marching, marching
King George's men came marching
Up to the old inn door

They said no word to the landlord
They drank his ale instead
But they gagged his daughter and bound her
To the foot of her narrow bed
Two of them knelt at the casement
With muskets at their side
There was death at every window
Hell at one dark window
For Bess could see through the casement
The road that he would ride

They tied her up to attention
With many a sniggering jest
They had bound a musket beside her
With the barrel beneath her breast
"Now keep good watch" and they kissed her
She heard the dead man say
"Look for me by the moonlight
Watch for me by the moonlight
I'll come to thee by the moonlight
Though hell should bar the way"

She twisted her hands behind her
But all the knots held good!
But she writhed her hands 'til her fingers
Were wet with sweat or blood
They stretched and strained in the darkness
And the hours crawled by like years
Till now on the stroke of midnight
Cold on the stroke of midnight
The tip of her finger touched it
The trigger at least was hers

Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot had they heard it?
The horse's hooves rang clear
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot in the distance
Were they deaf they did not hear?
Down the ribbon of moonlight
Over the brow of the hill
The highwayman came riding
Riding, riding
The redcoats looked to their priming
She stood up straight and still

Tot-a-lot in the frosty silence
Tot-a-lot in the echoing night
Nearer he came and nearer
Her face was like a light
Her eyes grew wide for a moment
She drew a last deep breath
Then her finger moved in the moonlight
Her musket shattered the moonlight
Shattered her breast in the moonlight
And warned him with her death

He turned, he spurred to the west
He did not know she stood
Bowed with her head o'er musket
Drenched with her own red blood
Not till the dawn he heard it
His face grew grey to hear
How Bess the landlord's daughter
The landlord's black-eyed daughter
Had watched for her love in the moonlight
And died in the darkness there

And back, he spurred like a madman
Shrieking a curse to the sky
With the white road smoking behind him
And his rapier brandished high!
Blood-red were the spurs in the golden noon
Wine-red was his velvet coat
When they shot him down in the highway
Down like a dog on the highway
And he lay in his blood in the highway
With a bunch of lace at his throat

Still on a winter's night they say
When the wind is in the trees
When the moon is a ghostly galleon
Tossed upon the cloudy seas
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight
Over the purple moor
A highwayman comes riding
Riding, riding,
A highwayman comes riding
Up to the old inn door

The wind was a torrent of darkness
Der Wind war ein Strom der Dunkelheit
Among the gusty trees
Unter den stürmischen Bäumen
The moon was a ghostly galleon
Der Mond war eine gespenstische Galeere
Tossed upon the cloudy seas
Geworfen auf den wolkigen Meeren
The road was a ribbon of moonlight
Die Straße war ein Band aus Mondlicht
Over the purple moor
Über das lila Moor
When the highwayman came riding
Als der Straßenräuber kam geritten
Riding, riding
Reiten, reiten
The highwayman came riding
Der Straßenräuber kam geritten
Up to the old inn door
Bis zur alten Gasthaustür
A bunch of lace at his chin
Eine Spitzenborte an seinem Kinn
A coat of claret velvet
Einen Mantel aus karmesinrotem Samt
And breeches of brown doe-skin
Und Hosen aus braunem Rehleder
They fitted with never a wrinkle
Sie passten ohne eine einzige Falte
His boots were up to the thigh
Seine Stiefel reichten bis zum Oberschenkel
And he rode with a jeweled twinkle
Und er ritt mit einem juwelenbesetzten Funkeln
His pistol butts a-twinkle
Seine Pistolenknaufe funkelten
His rapier hilt a-twinkle
Sein Rapiergriff funkelte
Under the jeweled sky
Unter dem juwelenbesetzten Himmel
And over cobbles he clattered
Und über Kopfsteinpflaster klapperte er
And clashed in the dark inn-yard
Und krachte im dunklen Gasthofshof
And he tapped with his whip on the shutters
But all was locked and barred
Aber alles war verschlossen und verriegelt
He whistled a tune to the window
Er pfiff ein Lied zum Fenster hinauf
And who should be waiting there
Und wer sollte dort warten
But the landlord's black-eyed daughter
Aber die schwarzäugige Tochter des Wirts
Bess, the landlord's daughter
Bess, die Tochter des Wirts
Plaiting a dark red love knot
Flechtend einen dunkelroten Liebesknoten
Into her long black hair
In ihr langes schwarzes Haar
"One kiss my bonny sweetheart
„Einen Kuss, meine hübsche Liebste
I'm after a prize tonight
But I should be back with the yellow gold
Before the morning light
Vor dem Morgengrauen
Yet if they press me sharply
Doch wenn sie mich scharf drängen
And harry me through the day
Und mich den ganzen Tag hetzen
Then look for me by the moonlight
Dann suche mich im Mondlicht
Watch for me by the moonlight
Warte auf mich im Mondlicht
I'll come to thee by the moonlight
Ich werde zu dir kommen im Mondlicht
Though hell should bar the way"
He rose up right in the stirrups
Er richtete sich auf in den Steigbügeln
He scarce could reach her hand
Er konnte ihre Hand kaum erreichen
But she loosened her hair in the casement
Aber sie löste ihr Haar im Fenster
His face burned like a brand
Sein Gesicht brannte wie eine Marke
As a black cascade of perfume
Als eine schwarze Kaskade von Parfüm
Came tumbling over his breast
Über seine Brust stürzte
And he kissed its waves in the moonlight
Und er küsste ihre Wellen im Mondlicht
Oh, sweet waves in the moonlight
Oh, süße Wellen im Mondlicht
He tugged at his rein in the moonlight
Er zog an seinem Zügel im Mondlicht
And galloped away to the west
Und galoppierte nach Westen
He did not come at the dawning
Er kam nicht bei Tagesanbruch
He did not come at noon
Er kam nicht mittags
And out of the tawny sunset
Und aus dem gelbbraunen Sonnenuntergang
Before the rise of the moon
Vor dem Aufgang des Mondes
When the road was a gypsy's ribbon
Als die Straße ein Zigeunerband war
Looping the purple moor
Schleifend über das lila Moor
A redcoat troop came marching
Kam eine Rotrocktruppe marschiert
Marching, marching
Marschieren, marschieren
King George's men came marching
Die Männer von König George kamen marschiert
Up to the old inn door
Bis zur alten Gasthaustür
They said no word to the landlord
Sie sagten kein Wort zum Wirt
They drank his ale instead
Sie tranken stattdessen sein Bier
But they gagged his daughter and bound her
To the foot of her narrow bed
An das Fußende ihres schmalen Bettes
Two of them knelt at the casement
Zwei von ihnen knieten am Fenster
With muskets at their side
Mit Musketen an ihrer Seite
There was death at every window
Es gab den Tod an jedem Fenster
Hell at one dark window
Die Hölle an einem dunklen Fenster
For Bess could see through the casement
Denn Bess konnte durch das Fenster sehen
The road that he would ride
Die Straße, die er reiten würde
They tied her up to attention
Sie banden sie aufmerksam
With many a sniggering jest
Mit vielen spöttischen Witzen
They had bound a musket beside her
Sie hatten eine Muskete neben ihr gebunden
With the barrel beneath her breast
Mit dem Lauf unter ihrer Brust
"Now keep good watch" and they kissed her
„Jetzt haltet gut Wache“ und sie küssten sie
She heard the dead man say
Sie hörte den toten Mann sagen
"Look for me by the moonlight
„Suche mich im Mondlicht
Watch for me by the moonlight
Warte auf mich im Mondlicht
I'll come to thee by the moonlight
Ich werde zu dir kommen im Mondlicht
Though hell should bar the way"
She twisted her hands behind her
Sie verdrehte ihre Hände hinter sich
But all the knots held good!
Aber alle Knoten hielten gut!
But she writhed her hands 'til her fingers
Were wet with sweat or blood
Nass waren von Schweiß oder Blut
They stretched and strained in the darkness
And the hours crawled by like years
Und die Stunden krochen dahin wie Jahre
Till now on the stroke of midnight
Bis jetzt auf den Schlag von Mitternacht
Cold on the stroke of midnight
Kalt auf den Schlag von Mitternacht
The tip of her finger touched it
Die Spitze ihres Fingers berührte es
The trigger at least was hers
Der Abzug war endlich ihr
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot had they heard it?
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot hatten sie es gehört?
The horse's hooves rang clear
Die Hufe des Pferdes klangen klar
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot in the distance
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot in der Ferne
Were they deaf they did not hear?
Down the ribbon of moonlight
Den Mondlichtstreifen hinunter
Over the brow of the hill
Über den Hügelkamm
The highwayman came riding
Der Straßenräuber kam geritten
Riding, riding
Reiten, reiten
The redcoats looked to their priming
Die Rotröcke sahen auf ihr Zündpulver
She stood up straight and still
Sie stand aufrecht und still
Tot-a-lot in the frosty silence
Tot-a-lot in der frostigen Stille
Tot-a-lot in the echoing night
Tot-a-lot in der echoenden Nacht
Nearer he came and nearer
Näher kam er und näher
Her face was like a light
Ihr Gesicht war wie ein Licht
Her eyes grew wide for a moment
Ihre Augen weiteten sich für einen Moment
She drew a last deep breath
Sie holte einen letzten tiefen Atemzug
Then her finger moved in the moonlight
Dann bewegte sich ihr Finger im Mondlicht
Her musket shattered the moonlight
Ihre Muskete zerschmetterte das Mondlicht
Shattered her breast in the moonlight
Zerschmetterte ihre Brust im Mondlicht
And warned him with her death
Und warnte ihn mit ihrem Tod
He turned, he spurred to the west
He did not know she stood
Er wusste nicht, dass sie stand
Bowed with her head o'er musket
Gebeugt mit dem Kopf über der Muskete
Drenched with her own red blood
Durchnässt mit ihrem eigenen roten Blut
Not till the dawn he heard it
Erst bei Tagesanbruch hörte er es
His face grew grey to hear
Sein Gesicht wurde grau beim Hören
How Bess the landlord's daughter
Wie Bess, die Tochter des Wirts
The landlord's black-eyed daughter
Die schwarzäugige Tochter des Wirts
Had watched for her love in the moonlight
Auf ihre Liebe im Mondlicht gewartet hatte
And died in the darkness there
Und in der Dunkelheit dort gestorben war
And back, he spurred like a madman
Und zurück, er spornte wie ein Wahnsinniger
Shrieking a curse to the sky
Schreiend einen Fluch in den Himmel
With the white road smoking behind him
Mit der weißen Straße rauchend hinter ihm
And his rapier brandished high!
Und seinem hochgeschwungenen Rapier!
Blood-red were the spurs in the golden noon
Blutrot waren die Sporen im goldenen Mittag
Wine-red was his velvet coat
Weinrot war sein Samtmantel
When they shot him down in the highway
Als sie ihn auf der Straße erschossen
Down like a dog on the highway
Nieder wie einen Hund auf der Straße
And he lay in his blood in the highway
With a bunch of lace at his throat
Mit einer Spitzenborte an seinem Hals
Still on a winter's night they say
Noch immer sagen sie an einem Winterabend
When the wind is in the trees

Riding, riding,
Reiten, reiten,
A highwayman comes riding
Ein Straßenräuber kommt geritten
Up to the old inn door
Bis zur alten Gasthaustür
The wind was a torrent of darkness
O vento era um torrente de escuridão
Among the gusty trees
Entre as árvores ventosas
The moon was a ghostly galleon
A lua era um galeão fantasmagórico
Tossed upon the cloudy seas
Jogado sobre os mares nublados
The road was a ribbon of moonlight
Over the purple moor
Sobre o charco púrpura
When the highwayman came riding
Quando o salteador veio cavalgando
Riding, riding
Cavalgando, cavalgando
The highwayman came riding
O salteador veio cavalgando
Up to the old inn door
Até a porta da velha estalagem
He'd a French cocked hat at his forehead
Ele tinha um chapéu francês na testa
A bunch of lace at his chin
Um monte de renda no queixo
A coat of claret velvet
Um casaco de veludo clarete
And breeches of brown doe-skin
E calças de pele de corça marrom
They fitted with never a wrinkle
Eles se ajustaram sem uma única ruga
His boots were up to the thigh
Suas botas estavam até a coxa
And he rode with a jeweled twinkle
His pistol butts a-twinkle
Suas pistolas brilhavam
His rapier hilt a-twinkle
Sua espada brilhava
Under the jeweled sky
Sob o céu enfeitado de jóias
And over cobbles he clattered
E sobre os paralelepípedos ele chocalhou
And clashed in the dark inn-yard
E chocou-se no escuro pátio da estalagem
And he tapped with his whip on the shutters
But all was locked and barred
Mas tudo estava trancado e barrado
He whistled a tune to the window
Ele assobiou uma melodia para a janela
And who should be waiting there
E quem deveria estar esperando lá
But the landlord's black-eyed daughter
Bess, the landlord's daughter
Bess, a filha do estalajadeiro
Plaiting a dark red love knot
Trançando um nó de amor vermelho escuro
Into her long black hair
Em seu longo cabelo preto
"One kiss my bonny sweetheart
"Um beijo minha doce amada
I'm after a prize tonight
Estou atrás de um prêmio esta noite
But I should be back with the yellow gold
Before the morning light
Antes da luz da manhã
Yet if they press me sharply
No entanto, se eles me pressionarem fortemente
And harry me through the day
E me atormentarem durante o dia
Then look for me by the moonlight
Então me procure à luz da lua
Watch for me by the moonlight
Me espere à luz da lua
I'll come to thee by the moonlight
Eu virei até você à luz da lua
Though hell should bar the way"
Embora o inferno deva barrar o caminho"
He rose up right in the stirrups
Ele se levantou direito nos estribos
He scarce could reach her hand
Ele mal podia alcançar sua mão
But she loosened her hair in the casement
Mas ela soltou seu cabelo na janela
His face burned like a brand
Seu rosto queimava como uma marca
As a black cascade of perfume
Como uma cascata negra de perfume
Came tumbling over his breast
Veio caindo sobre seu peito
And he kissed its waves in the moonlight
Oh, sweet waves in the moonlight
Oh, doces ondas à luz da lua
He tugged at his rein in the moonlight
Ele puxou as rédeas à luz da lua
And galloped away to the west
E galopou para o oeste
He did not come at the dawning
Ele não veio ao amanhecer
He did not come at noon
Ele não veio ao meio-dia
And out of the tawny sunset
E fora do pôr do sol fulvo
Before the rise of the moon
Antes do surgimento da lua
When the road was a gypsy's ribbon
Looping the purple moor
Circulando o charco púrpura
A redcoat troop came marching
Uma tropa de casacas vermelhas veio marchando
Marching, marching
Marchando, marchando
King George's men came marching
Os homens do Rei George vieram marchando
Up to the old inn door
Até a porta da velha estalagem
They said no word to the landlord
Eles não disseram uma palavra ao estalajadeiro
They drank his ale instead
Eles beberam sua cerveja em vez disso
But they gagged his daughter and bound her
To the foot of her narrow bed
Ao pé de sua cama estreita
Two of them knelt at the casement
Dois deles se ajoelharam na janela
With muskets at their side

There was death at every window

Watch for me by the moonlight
Me espere à luz da lua
I'll come to thee by the moonlight
Eu virei até você à luz da lua
Though hell should bar the way"
Embora o inferno deva barrar o caminho"
She twisted her hands behind her
Ela torceu suas mãos atrás dela
But all the knots held good!
Mas todos os nós se mantiveram firmes!
But she writhed her hands 'til her fingers
Were wet with sweat or blood
Estavam molhados de suor ou sangue
They stretched and strained in the darkness
And the hours crawled by like years
E as horas se arrastaram como anos
Till now on the stroke of midnight
Até agora no golpe da meia-noite
Cold on the stroke of midnight
Frio no golpe da meia-noite
The tip of her finger touched it
A ponta do dedo dela tocou
The trigger at least was hers
O gatilho finalmente era dela
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot had they heard it?
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot eles ouviram?
The horse's hooves rang clear
Os cascos do cavalo soaram claros
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot in the distance

Were they deaf they did not hear?
Eles eram surdos que não ouviram?
Down the ribbon of moonlight
Pela fita de luz da lua
Over the brow of the hill
Sobre a crista da colina
The highwayman came riding
O salteador veio cavalgando
Riding, riding
Cavalgando, cavalgando
The redcoats looked to their priming
Os casacas vermelhas olharam para suas armas
She stood up straight and still
Ela se levantou reta e imóvel
Tot-a-lot in the frosty silence
Tot-a-lot no silêncio gélido
Tot-a-lot in the echoing night
Tot-a-lot na noite ecoante
Nearer he came and nearer
Mais perto ele veio e mais perto
Her face was like a light
Seu rosto era como uma luz

He did not know she stood
Bowed with her head o'er musket

Blood-red were the spurs in the golden noon
Vermelho-sangue eram as esporas ao meio-dia dourado
Wine-red was his velvet coat
Vermelho-vinho era seu casaco de veludo
When they shot him down in the highway
Quando eles o abateram na estrada
Down like a dog on the highway
Abaixo como um cão na estrada
And he lay in his blood in the highway
With a bunch of lace at his throat
Still on a winter's night they say
When the wind is in the trees

The wind was a torrent of darkness
El viento era un torrente de oscuridad
Among the gusty trees
Entre los árboles ventosos
The moon was a ghostly galleon
La luna era un galeón fantasmal
Tossed upon the cloudy seas
Arrojado sobre los mares nublados
The road was a ribbon of moonlight
Over the purple moor
Sobre el páramo púrpura
When the highwayman came riding
Cuando el bandolero vino cabalgando
Riding, riding
Cabalgando, cabalgando
The highwayman came riding
El bandolero vino cabalgando
Up to the old inn door
Hasta la vieja puerta de la posada
He'd a French cocked hat at his forehead
Tenía un sombrero francés en su frente
A bunch of lace at his chin
Un montón de encaje en su barbilla
A coat of claret velvet
Un abrigo de terciopelo clarete
And breeches of brown doe-skin
Y calzones de piel de cierva marrón
They fitted with never a wrinkle
Le quedaban sin una sola arruga
His boots were up to the thigh
Sus botas llegaban hasta el muslo
And he rode with a jeweled twinkle
Y cabalgaba con un brillo joyado
His pistol butts a-twinkle
Sus culatas de pistola brillaban
His rapier hilt a-twinkle
Su empuñadura de estoque brillaba
Under the jeweled sky
Bajo el cielo joyado
And over cobbles he clattered
Y sobre los adoquines retumbaba
And clashed in the dark inn-yard
And he tapped with his whip on the shutters
But all was locked and barred
Pero todo estaba cerrado y atrancado
He whistled a tune to the window
Silbó una melodía a la ventana
And who should be waiting there
Y quién debería estar esperando allí
But the landlord's black-eyed daughter
Bess, the landlord's daughter
Bess, la hija del posadero
Plaiting a dark red love knot
Trenzando un nudo de amor rojo oscuro
Into her long black hair
En su largo cabello negro
"One kiss my bonny sweetheart
"Un beso mi bonita dulzura
I'm after a prize tonight
Voy tras un premio esta noche
But I should be back with the yellow gold
Pero debería volver con el oro amarillo
Before the morning light
Antes de la luz de la mañana
Yet if they press me sharply
Sin embargo, si me presionan fuertemente
And harry me through the day
Y me acosan durante el día
Then look for me by the moonlight
Watch for me by the moonlight
Vigílame a la luz de la luna
I'll come to thee by the moonlight
Vendré a ti a la luz de la luna
Though hell should bar the way"
Aunque el infierno debería bloquear el camino"
He rose up right in the stirrups
Se levantó derecho en los estribos
He scarce could reach her hand
Apenas podía alcanzar su mano
But she loosened her hair in the casement
His face burned like a brand
Su rostro ardía como una marca
As a black cascade of perfume
Como una cascada negra de perfume
Came tumbling over his breast
Cayó sobre su pecho
And he kissed its waves in the moonlight
Y besó sus olas a la luz de la luna
Oh, sweet waves in the moonlight
Oh, dulces olas a la luz de la luna
He tugged at his rein in the moonlight
And galloped away to the west
Y galopó hacia el oeste
He did not come at the dawning
No vino al amanecer
He did not come at noon
No vino al mediodía
And out of the tawny sunset
Y fuera del atardecer leonado
Before the rise of the moon
Antes de la salida de la luna
When the road was a gypsy's ribbon
Looping the purple moor
Bucleando el páramo púrpura
A redcoat troop came marching
Una tropa de casacas rojas vino marchando
Marching, marching
Marchando, marchando
King George's men came marching
Los hombres del rey Jorge vinieron marchando
Up to the old inn door
Hasta la vieja puerta de la posada
They said no word to the landlord
No dijeron una palabra al posadero
They drank his ale instead
En su lugar, bebieron su cerveza
But they gagged his daughter and bound her
To the foot of her narrow bed
Al pie de su estrecha cama
Two of them knelt at the casement
With muskets at their side
Con mosquetes a su lado
There was death at every window
Había muerte en cada ventana
Hell at one dark window
Infierno en una oscura ventana
For Bess could see through the casement
The road that he would ride
El camino que él cabalgaría
They tied her up to attention
La ataron para que prestara atención
With many a sniggering jest
Con muchas bromas burlonas
They had bound a musket beside her
Habían atado un mosquete junto a ella
With the barrel beneath her breast
Con el cañón debajo de su pecho
"Now keep good watch" and they kissed her
"Ahora mantén buena vigilancia" y la besaron
She heard the dead man say
Ella escuchó al hombre muerto decir
"Look for me by the moonlight
"Búscame a la luz de la luna
Watch for me by the moonlight
Vigílame a la luz de la luna
I'll come to thee by the moonlight
Vendré a ti a la luz de la luna
Though hell should bar the way"
Aunque el infierno debería bloquear el camino"
She twisted her hands behind her
Ella retorció sus manos detrás de ella
But all the knots held good!
¡Pero todos los nudos se mantuvieron firmes!
But she writhed her hands 'til her fingers
Were wet with sweat or blood
Estaban mojados de sudor o sangre
They stretched and strained in the darkness
And the hours crawled by like years
Y las horas pasaban como años
Till now on the stroke of midnight
Cold on the stroke of midnight
Frío en el golpe de la medianoche
The tip of her finger touched it
La punta de su dedo lo tocó
The trigger at least was hers
El gatillo al menos era suyo
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot had they heard it?
¿Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot lo habían oído?
The horse's hooves rang clear
Los cascos del caballo sonaban claros
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot in the distance
¿Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot a la distancia
Were they deaf they did not hear?
Estaban sordos que no oían?
Down the ribbon of moonlight
Bajando la cinta de luz de luna
Over the brow of the hill
Sobre la cima de la colina
The highwayman came riding
El bandolero vino cabalgando
Riding, riding
Cabalgando, cabalgando
The redcoats looked to their priming
Las casacas rojas miraron su cebado
She stood up straight and still
Tot-a-lot in the frosty silence
Tot-a-lot en el silencio helado
Tot-a-lot in the echoing night
Tot-a-lot en la noche resonante
Nearer he came and nearer
Más cerca venía y más cerca
Her face was like a light
Su rostro era como una luz
Her eyes grew wide for a moment
She drew a last deep breath
Tomó un último aliento profundo
Then her finger moved in the moonlight
Her musket shattered the moonlight
Shattered her breast in the moonlight
And warned him with her death
Y lo advirtió con su muerte
He turned, he spurred to the west
Se giró, espoleó hacia el oeste
He did not know she stood
No sabía que ella estaba de pie
Bowed with her head o'er musket
Inclinada con la cabeza sobre el mosquete
Drenched with her own red blood
Empapada con su propia sangre roja
Not till the dawn he heard it
No hasta el amanecer lo escuchó
His face grew grey to hear
Su rostro se puso gris al oír
How Bess the landlord's daughter
Cómo Bess, la hija del posadero
The landlord's black-eyed daughter
La hija de ojos negros del posadero
Had watched for her love in the moonlight
And died in the darkness there
Y murió en la oscuridad allí
And back, he spurred like a madman
Y de vuelta, espoleó como un loco
Shrieking a curse to the sky
Gritando una maldición al cielo
With the white road smoking behind him
And his rapier brandished high!
¡Y su estoque en alto!
Blood-red were the spurs in the golden noon
Wine-red was his velvet coat
Rojo vino era su abrigo de terciopelo
When they shot him down in the highway
Cuando le dispararon en la carretera
Down like a dog on the highway
Abajo como un perro en la carretera
And he lay in his blood in the highway
With a bunch of lace at his throat
Still on a winter's night they say
Todavía en una noche de invierno dicen
When the wind is in the trees
Cuando el viento está en los árboles
When the moon is a ghostly galleon
Cuando la luna es un galeón fantasmal
Tossed upon the cloudy seas
Arrojado sobre los mares nublados
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight
Over the purple moor
Sobre el páramo púrpura
A highwayman comes riding
Un bandolero viene cabalgando
Riding, riding,
Cabalgando, cabalgando,
A highwayman comes riding
Un bandolero viene cabalgando
Up to the old inn door
Hasta la vieja puerta de la posada
The wind was a torrent of darkness
Le vent était un torrent de ténèbres
Among the gusty trees
Parmi les arbres venteux
The moon was a ghostly galleon
La lune était un galion fantomatique
Tossed upon the cloudy seas
Jeté sur les mers nuageuses
The road was a ribbon of moonlight
Over the purple moor
Sur la lande pourpre
When the highwayman came riding
Quand le bandit est venu à cheval
Riding, riding
Chevauchant, chevauchant
The highwayman came riding
Le bandit est venu à cheval
Up to the old inn door
A bunch of lace at his chin
Un bouquet de dentelle à son menton
A coat of claret velvet
Un manteau de velours claret
And breeches of brown doe-skin
They fitted with never a wrinkle
Ils s'ajustaient sans un pli
His boots were up to the thigh
Ses bottes montaient jusqu'à la cuisse
And he rode with a jeweled twinkle
His pistol butts a-twinkle
Ses crosses de pistolet scintillaient
His rapier hilt a-twinkle
Son pommeau d'épée scintillait
Under the jeweled sky
Sous le ciel bijouté
And over cobbles he clattered
Et sur les pavés il claquait
And clashed in the dark inn-yard
And he tapped with his whip on the shutters
But all was locked and barred
Mais tout était fermé et barré
He whistled a tune to the window
Il sifflait une mélodie à la fenêtre
And who should be waiting there
Et qui devrait attendre là
But the landlord's black-eyed daughter
Bess, the landlord's daughter
Bess, la fille du propriétaire
Plaiting a dark red love knot
Tressant un nœud d'amour rouge foncé
Into her long black hair
Dans ses longs cheveux noirs
"One kiss my bonny sweetheart
"Un baiser ma douce chérie
I'm after a prize tonight
Je suis après un prix ce soir
But I should be back with the yellow gold
Before the morning light
Avant la lumière du matin
Yet if they press me sharply
Pourtant, s'ils me pressent vivement
And harry me through the day
Et me harcèlent tout au long de la journée
Then look for me by the moonlight
Alors cherchez-moi au clair de lune
Watch for me by the moonlight
Surveillez-moi au clair de lune
I'll come to thee by the moonlight
Though hell should bar the way"
He rose up right in the stirrups
Il se leva droit dans les étriers
He scarce could reach her hand
Il pouvait à peine atteindre sa main
But she loosened her hair in the casement
His face burned like a brand
Son visage brûlait comme une marque
As a black cascade of perfume
Comme une cascade noire de parfum
Came tumbling over his breast
Est tombé sur sa poitrine
And he kissed its waves in the moonlight
Oh, sweet waves in the moonlight
Oh, douces vagues au clair de lune
He tugged at his rein in the moonlight
And galloped away to the west
Et galopa vers l'ouest
He did not come at the dawning
Il n'est pas venu à l'aube
He did not come at noon
Il n'est pas venu à midi
And out of the tawny sunset
Et hors du coucher de soleil fauve
Before the rise of the moon
Avant le lever de la lune
When the road was a gypsy's ribbon
Looping the purple moor
Bouclant la lande pourpre
A redcoat troop came marching
Une troupe de redcoats est venue marcher
Marching, marching
Marchant, marchant
King George's men came marching
Up to the old inn door
They said no word to the landlord
They drank his ale instead
Ils ont bu sa bière à la place
But they gagged his daughter and bound her
To the foot of her narrow bed
Au pied de son lit étroit
Two of them knelt at the casement
With muskets at their side
Avec des mousquets à leur côté
There was death at every window
Hell at one dark window
L'enfer à une fenêtre sombre
For Bess could see through the casement
Car Bess pouvait voir à travers la fenêtre
The road that he would ride
La route qu'il allait prendre
They tied her up to attention
Ils l'ont attachée à l'attention
With many a sniggering jest
Avec beaucoup de plaisanteries moqueuses
They had bound a musket beside her
With the barrel beneath her breast
Avec le canon sous sa poitrine
"Now keep good watch" and they kissed her
"Maintenant, garde bien le guet" et ils l'ont embrassée
She heard the dead man say
Elle a entendu le mort dire
"Look for me by the moonlight
"Cherchez-moi au clair de lune
Watch for me by the moonlight
Surveillez-moi au clair de lune
I'll come to thee by the moonlight
Though hell should bar the way"
She twisted her hands behind her
Elle a tordu ses mains derrière elle
But all the knots held good!
Mais tous les nœuds tenaient bon !
But she writhed her hands 'til her fingers
Were wet with sweat or blood
Soient mouillés de sueur ou de sang
They stretched and strained in the darkness
And the hours crawled by like years
Et les heures rampaient comme des années
Till now on the stroke of midnight
Jusqu'à maintenant, au coup de minuit
Cold on the stroke of midnight
Froid au coup de minuit
The tip of her finger touched it
The trigger at least was hers
La gâchette était enfin à elle
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot had they heard it?
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot l'avaient-ils entendu ?
The horse's hooves rang clear
Les sabots du cheval sonnaient clairement
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot in the distance
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot au loin
Were they deaf they did not hear?
Étaient-ils sourds pour ne pas entendre ?
Down the ribbon of moonlight
Over the brow of the hill
Par-dessus le sommet de la colline
The highwayman came riding
Le bandit est venu à cheval
Riding, riding
Chevauchant, chevauchant
The redcoats looked to their priming
Les redcoats ont regardé leur amorce
She stood up straight and still
Elle se tenait droite et immobile
Tot-a-lot in the frosty silence
Tot-a-lot dans le silence givré
Tot-a-lot in the echoing night
Tot-a-lot dans la nuit résonnante
Nearer he came and nearer
Il s'approchait de plus en plus
Her face was like a light
Son visage était comme une lumière
Her eyes grew wide for a moment
She drew a last deep breath
Elle a pris une dernière grande respiration
Then her finger moved in the moonlight
Her musket shattered the moonlight
Shattered her breast in the moonlight
And warned him with her death
Et l'a averti avec sa mort
He turned, he spurred to the west
He did not know she stood
Bowed with her head o'er musket
Inclinée avec sa tête sur le mousquet
Drenched with her own red blood
Trempée de son propre sang rouge
Not till the dawn he heard it
Ce n'est qu'à l'aube qu'il l'a entendu
His face grew grey to hear
How Bess the landlord's daughter
Comment Bess, la fille du propriétaire
The landlord's black-eyed daughter
La fille aux yeux noirs du propriétaire
Had watched for her love in the moonlight
And died in the darkness there
Et est morte dans l'obscurité là-bas
And back, he spurred like a madman
Shrieking a curse to the sky
Hurlant une malédiction vers le ciel
With the white road smoking behind him
Avec la route blanche fumante derrière lui
And his rapier brandished high!
Et son épée brandie haut !
Blood-red were the spurs in the golden noon
Rouge sang étaient les éperons à midi doré
Wine-red was his velvet coat
Rouge vin était son manteau de velours
When they shot him down in the highway
Down like a dog on the highway
Comme un chien sur la route
And he lay in his blood in the highway

Among the gusty trees
Tra gli alberi burrascosi
The moon was a ghostly galleon
La luna era un galeone spettrale

Sopra la brughiera viola
When the highwayman came riding

His pistol butts a-twinkle
Le sue pistole luccicavano
His rapier hilt a-twinkle
La sua spada luccicava
Under the jeweled sky
Sotto il cielo di gioielli
And over cobbles he clattered
E sui ciottoli rimbombava
And clashed in the dark inn-yard
And he tapped with his whip on the shutters
But all was locked and barred
Ma tutto era chiuso e barricato
He whistled a tune to the window

And who should be waiting there

Till now on the stroke of midnight
Sampai sekarang pada pukulan tengah malam
Cold on the stroke of midnight
Dingin pada pukulan tengah malam
The tip of her finger touched it
Ujung jarinya menyentuhnya
The trigger at least was hers
Pelatuk setidaknya adalah miliknya
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot had they heard it?
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot apakah mereka mendengarnya?
The horse's hooves rang clear
Kuku kuda berbunyi jelas
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot in the distance
Tot-a-lot, tot-a-lot di kejauhan
Were they deaf they did not hear?
Apakah mereka tuli mereka tidak mendengar?
Down the ribbon of moonlight
Turun pita cahaya bulan
Over the brow of the hill
Di atas puncak bukit
The highwayman came riding
Perampok jalan raya datang berkuda
Riding, riding
Berkuda, berkuda
The redcoats looked to their priming
Pasukan merah melihat ke peluru mereka
She stood up straight and still
Dia berdiri tegak dan diam
Tot-a-lot in the frosty silence
Tot-a-lot dalam keheningan beku
Tot-a-lot in the echoing night
Tot-a-lot dalam malam yang bergema
Nearer he came and nearer
Dia datang semakin dekat dan semakin dekat
Her face was like a light
Wajahnya seperti cahaya
Her eyes grew wide for a moment
Matanya melebar sejenak
She drew a last deep breath
Dia menarik napas dalam-dalam terakhir
Then her finger moved in the moonlight
Lalu jarinya bergerak di bawah cahaya bulan
Her musket shattered the moonlight
Senapannya menghancurkan cahaya bulan
Shattered her breast in the moonlight
Menghancurkan dadanya di bawah cahaya bulan
And warned him with her death
Dan memperingatkannya dengan kematiannya
He turned, he spurred to the west
Dia berbalik, dia mengejar ke barat
He did not know she stood
Dia tidak tahu dia berdiri
Bowed with her head o'er musket
Menunduk dengan kepalanya di atas senapan
Drenched with her own red blood
Basah dengan darahnya sendiri
Not till the dawn he heard it
Tidak sampai fajar dia mendengarnya
His face grew grey to hear
Wajahnya menjadi abu-abu mendengar
How Bess the landlord's daughter
Bagaimana Bess putri pemilik penginapan
The landlord's black-eyed daughter
Putri pemilik penginapan ber mata hitam
Had watched for her love in the moonlight
Telah menunggu cintanya di bawah cahaya bulan
And died in the darkness there
Dan mati dalam kegelapan di sana
And back, he spurred like a madman
Dan kembali, dia mengejar seperti orang gila
Shrieking a curse to the sky
Menjerit kutukan ke langit
With the white road smoking behind him
Dengan jalan putih mengasap di belakangnya
And his rapier brandished high!
Dan pedangnya diacungkan tinggi!
Blood-red were the spurs in the golden noon
Wine-red was his velvet coat
Merah anggur adalah mantel beludru nya
When they shot him down in the highway
Ketika mereka menembaknya di jalan raya
Down like a dog on the highway
Turun seperti anjing di jalan raya
And he lay in his blood in the highway
With a bunch of lace at his throat
Dengan seikat renda di tenggorokannya
Still on a winter's night they say
Masih pada malam musim dingin mereka berkata
When the wind is in the trees
Ketika angin berada di pepohonan
When the moon is a ghostly galleon
Ketika bulan adalah kapal hantu
Tossed upon the cloudy seas
Terombang-ambing di lautan awan
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight
Ketika jalan adalah pita cahaya bulan
Over the purple moor
Di atas rawa ungu
A highwayman comes riding
Seorang perampok jalan raya datang berkuda
Riding, riding,
Berkuda, berkuda,
A highwayman comes riding
Seorang perampok jalan raya datang berkuda
Up to the old inn door
Menuju pintu penginapan tua
