Shot To Hell
Sipping wine in Elysian Fields
Where the sun is gold and the men genteel
I found myself a-wandering along a silver shore
When I came across a man I've never seen before
He said "Son, can you see where the horizon ends?
I'll sail out there and dive off the edge.
This world's a paradise, where I don't want to be
My story has been written but the plot unseen"
I said "sir, with respect, do you feel unwell?
You know our paradise is warmed by the fires of hell.
We live in blissful ignorance and hide the awful truth
So we can live a life of luxury and eat forbidden fruit"
Then he set his sails and hoisted anchor
The winds whipped, the waters churned
His brow sweat, his muscles burned
When the night turned to day
And the clouds had finally parted
He looked back at where he started
He watched the sea fall into open sky
Filled his lungs, closed his eyes
Crossed his heart, and hoped to die
And fell, shot to hell
When he awoke, he found his body was broken
Fading visions of the home he'd forsaken
The children found him there and sang his praise
"We are saved!"
"I'm sorry children," he replied in shame
"There is no heaven there to ease your pain
Above us only men and mankind's greed
But men are born of the same blood, and all men bleed
And hungry dogs will bite when greedy hands won't feed."
The winds whipped, the fires burned
He marched with the children armed
And they stormed the barricade!
When the gates had finally parted
He was back at where he started
He watched as Zion crumbled from the sky
Filled my lungs, closed my eyes
Crossed my heart, hoped to die
And fell, shot to hell
