The Road
I awoke
Into the blazing sunlight
Immediately I knew to look outside my window
I saw it there
The road
And suddenly for the first time in my life
I felt... hope
Like a cool protective aftershave
It left me zingy and ready for the day ahead
I breathed deep
And began my journey onward
The first thing I noticed
Were the many signs
For all along the road we have choices
And just like Sonic
All we have to do is collect the golden rings
But simple games breed clever fools
I grew reckless
Drifting to the middle of the road
And as the sun began its slow dissolve
Darkness came to call
(Though the road is long)
(May we all drive on)
('Til we all come home)
(In the end)
I found myself
Older now
No longer hip to the groove
No longer down
I am roadkill
Rabbit-blind
As the headlights of mainstream culture throttle mercilessly down upon me
As hair recedes
We all walk on
Into the great inevitable
The great unsung
Walk tall
We all come home in the end
Just make sure you keep moving
On the road
And so... the question
What is it that lets one man succeed
Where his brother fails?
The answer?
Press play, continue on
This is not a gameshow
This is not a rehearsal
This is not some shoddy indie guitar group with skinny jeans and pointy shoes
This is the road
Be proud
Of where you are
On the road
(And we'll all find our way)
(If we all drive on)
